Description & Nutritional Value

Black turtle beans, commonly known as black beans, are a variety of the common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris). Like all common beans, black beans are loaded with protein, fiber, molybdenum, zinc, and copper. But the health benefits of black turtle beans go way beyond the call of duty as these little black gems offer extraordinary antioxidant benefits resulting from their high concentration of anthocyanins.

How To Grow

Beans generally do not respond well to transplanting, and are usually direct sown around or just after the last spring frost. The most important point about growing beans is not to plant them too early. They will rot in cool, damp soil. Even so, many beans require a long growing season of 80 days or more. To get an earlier start, you can put down black plastic, to warm the soil.

How To Use

Great for soups, burritos and other dishes, black beans have a meaty texture and are rich in antioxidants. The distinct shiny black seeds are resistant to disease and can tolerate hot conditions. Black Turtle Beans come to maturity about 90 days after germinating, and can be harvested when leaves are falling off or have lost most of their color.
