Description & Nutritional Value

"Mary Washington" asparagus (Asparagus officinalis "Mary Washington") is one of the older and most common asparagus varieties. 'Mary Washington' is an heirloom variety with rust-resistant, uniform stalks. Asparagus is a hardy perennial with thick, succulent shoots that are harvested in April to early May, leaving younger shoots for future growth. Asparagus is high in vitamin K and many minerals.

How To Grow

To grow "Mary Washington" asparagus from seed, fill a 1 1/2-inch-deep seed flat with sterile potting soil and sow the seeds 1/2-inch deep and 2 inches apart in the flat. Water the potting soil to keep it moist and grow in a sunny window for one year before transplanting it to a permanent bed outdoors. Start the seeds in spring one year before transplanting a permanent bed. Water the asparagus after planting and as needed to keep the soil moist but not wet. "Mary Washington" asparagus days to maturity extend to about three years for the first small crop. Growing asparagus is a joy for gardeners of all ages and skill levels, and with Mary Washington Asparagus this joy becomes a true treat.
