Description & Nutritional Value

Introduced during the late 1800s this dark green bean matures to 5-6" long. Stringless while young and tender. Vines are upright and dark green. Great for home gardens and local market. The Commodore Improved bush bean is a compact plant with a high yield and relatively quick maturation. The pods are stringless and tender. The Commodore Improved is an All-American Selections winner. Commodore Improved Beans are also known as Bush Kentucky Wonder, of which it is an improved variety. Plants stay compact at 16 inches tall and produce vigorous, dark green, 6-8" long pods. This heirloom is a wonderful variety fresh or frozen. Green beans contain 6 grams of digestible carbs per serving, as well as antioxidants that may help prevent cancer and protect the brain. Green beans help diabetes management, and they even help you reduce eye degeneration and keep your immune levels high.

How To Grow

Plant your bush bean seeds outdoors directly in the garden after your last frost date. For a quicker start, you can soak your seeds 1 to 4 hours in warm water. If you soak the seeds too long, they will split or rot and will not germinate! Germination is improved when soil temperature is above 65 F. Plant in 2 to 3 weeks intervals for a steady harvest until about 3 months before first killing frost in the fall. Plants can grow 12 to 24" tall. Warning: Do not plant in cold wet soil or you may experience poor germination! Pinch or cut the pods off carefully to avoid damaging the plant. Pick every few days for tender beans. Frequent harvesting also encourages plant to produce more pods.
