Description & Nutritional Value

A garden favorite, the 'Topcrop' bush bean (Phaseolus vulgaris 'Topcrop') stands out among other bush bean varieties because of its compact growth habit and early yield. It reaches maturity as early as 48 days after sowing, according to the University of Arkansas Research Extension, when it produces a crop of bright green, stringless beans that you can eat fresh or can for the winter. Sometimes spelled 'Top Crop', 'Topcrop' bush beans resist bean mosaic virus and thrive in hot regions where other varieties may fail. However, this variety performs best and produces its biggest yields when grown under the right conditions.

How To Grow

Beans should be planted in spring after the last frost has occurred. Beans will germinate best once soil temps have reached 65 F or higher. Optimal germination temperature is around 77 F. Seeds can require 8 to 16 days to germinate, depending on the soil temperature. For continual production, succession plant every couple of weeks throughout the spring and early summer. Plants will drop blooms or cease production in the heat of summer. Subsequent succession plantings may be made in late summer/fall, as long as enough time is permitted before the first frost date.
