Description & Nutritional Value

An open pollinated, improved golden wax type that grows on compact, upright plants 15 to 18 inches tall. The tender, flavorful, stringless golden yellow pods are thick, meaty, slightly flat, straight and about 5 to 5 ½ inches long. Seeds are white with brown markings on the eyes. An excellent, heavy yielding, very popular home garden variety that is unbeatable for canning and freezing. Golden Wax beans are great fresh, frozen, or canned, steamed or cooked in a favorite recipe, or enjoyed raw as part of a salad or snack. They're low in calories, yet full of healthy carbohydrates and protein. They're also a great source of calcium, iron, and manganese, as well as vitamin C and other antioxidants.

How To Grow

Bush bean can be started indoors, but performs best if sown directly after the final spring frost. Sow 2-3 seeds 1” deep and 2-3” apart in moist, organically rich, well-drained soil with a pH of 6.0-6.8. Whether direct sowing or transplanting, thin out strongest starts to every 18-24” in the garden as true leaves establish. Beans need light and consistent watering but, when doing so, water as close to the root as possible to avoid saturating greens known to cause root rot and mildew. Plants thrive from a top layer of mulch to help cool soil and roots. Avoid nitrogen-rich fertilizers which will cause excessive vegetative growth with minimal bean pod production.
