Also known as 'Large Leaf Italian' basil, 'Sweet Basil' is native to Europe where it has been cultivated for centuries as a fresh and dried culinary herb. It has been a common plant in American kitchen gardens since the late 1700s. The leaves are used fresh to make pesto, and can be dried and used as a seasoning. This type of Basil is the tallest growing variety of Basil with its height reach of up to 4 feet. Its fragrance is an atypical mixture of various scents which in themselves are strong like that of the camphor, mint, peppers, and cloves.  This member of the mint family has been used as a medicinal plant, and its oils and extracts are said to have antioxidant and antibacterial properties.

How To Grow

Basil can be planted outdoors after the danger of frost has passed. • Choose a sunny location (6+ hours of sun) and dig a hole about two times as wide as your pot. • Remove your plant from the pot by loosening the soil and tipping it out into your hand. Place your plant in the soil about as deep as it was in the pot. • Refill the space around your plant with soil and press lightly to compact the dirt, keeping your plant firmly in the ground. • Water immediately to settle the soil, and add more soil as needed, bringing it level to the rest of your garden.

How To Use

They find their culinary place in the making of many Rice assortments, vegetable and meat dishes. Use Genovese basil in fresh tomato salad, pesto, general cooking, herb frittata; use lettuce leaf basil in salads, on crostini, as a ‘wrap’, or general cooking; use piccole where you want a really intense basil taste. To store, stand in a glass of water on the kitchen counter, like a bouquet. Or rinse and store in the crisper section in a plastic bag. You can dry basil, but it really does not have the same flavor. To store for cooking over the winter, try blending it with some water and freeze in ice cube containers. Then put the cubes in a plastic bag or container and return to the freezer.
