No garden is complete without Red Leaf Romaine Lettuce. This is a wonderful heirloom variety with good old-fashioned taste. First known to be cultivated in the eastern Mediterranean region and western Asia, lettuce has a long and distinguished history dating back to 4500 BC where ancient Greeks and Romans consumed lettuce for its therapeutic medicinal properties. Christopher Columbus is credited for bringing lettuce to North America and missionaries planted lettuce in California in the 17th century. It wasn’t until the invention of refrigerated railcars that lettuce became available throughout the United States adding to its increased popularity.

Red romaine lettuce has long crunchy spoon shaped leaves that start green and fade to profuse purple/red. Leaves are12" tall and the plant is about 10-12" wide. This lettuce is often used in Caesar salads for its crunch and color. Use red romaine lettuce for incredible edible purple borders in your flower beds. This is a great seller at farmers markets for its color and holds up well under transport.

TIP: Remember if you are growing lettuce in the heat, plant them where they will get afternoon shade. Lettuce is a spring and fall crop. Lettuce also like moist rich soil! Seeds can be sown directly into garden when soil is warm or started in containers and transplanted. This can be grown nicely in containers and clay pots.

Zones 3-10 All seeds are packaged and for the current growing season.
